what to buy?

Hey guys Iv'e decided to upgrade my pc which i havnt been using for anything except ms word and internet for a while into a pc able to play games. I dont want anyhing too fancy but i would like it to be able to run new games. I am willing to spend up to $500 at the most but preferably less on more RAM a new graphics card and a new processor. at the moment i have 1 gb of ram a 1.8 GHz processor and a Geforce 5200 so you see a need something new to play games.any suggestions would be great.what to buy?
If you live in the US then you can get something cheap like this for example http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883109017 and then spend the rest on a new powersupply/GPU EDIT- I just checked you profile and it looks like your from AUS so I can't really help you much since I don't any sites and im not good with that currencywhat to buy?
my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA 7n400 pro 2.0
Your computer is far too old to make it worth upgrading, and in some cases it's nigh impossible to find such old parts which even if you could would not run any games made since 2000. You need to start anew, and I'm not familiar with the Australian dollar and hardware prices there. But you're going to want a brand new computer from scratch which means spending at least $1000 US if you want it to play games well.
ive decided to buy a new mothrboard a gigabyte EP 35 DS3 and a 8800GT graphiccs card and an intel E8400 processor all that plus 4 gb of DDR2 RAM for around $500 down at MSY anything wrong with that set up.

You might consider a P45 motherboard if you can afford the increased cost most have. And a a HD4850 both because it slightly outperforms the 8800 for a slight price increase and because most P45 boards are Crossfire incase you decide to get a second card some day. But if you stick with a P35 board with one PCI-E slot it doesn't matter if you go ATI or Nvidia and the 8800GT still maxes out just about every game out there.
thanks do you think i will need anything else new eg sound card, power supply...

Unless you're a serious audiophile you can do just fine with 5.1 or 7.1 onboard sound. It used to be onboard sound was shoddy and a serious CPU drain but that's no longer the case with current hardware. For a setup like you're getting you should be good with any NAME brand PSU at around 600+ watts. Anything by Antec, ABS, Hyper, Thermatake to name a few brands are very high quality. Ones that come with modular cables are the best as they really help de-clutter the inside of your case. With a similar set up to what you're getting I have one of these.
