I'm planning on overhauling my PC hardcore early August and wanted some advice concerning mobo and video card. Right now I'm looking at the evga 780i FTW ed. and a GTX 260. My one concern with that is the 780i only supports DDR2 MEMORY. Now I realize a video card and RAM are two different things, but will the board not like the GTX 260 b/c it's DDR3? My other major concern with the mobo is if it's futureproof. I know there isn't really a such thing as future proof in the pc hardware market, but will it last me a while or is there something else I should invest in? I am kinda scared to go with the 790i b/c of all the reported problems it's having (this'll be my first build). As for the GTX 260, to put it plainly, does it suck? I know it's one of the newest nvid. cards out right now and it's DDR3 so I figured it'd be beastly and DDR3 to last me a long while? Please help any advice will be appreciated!! Need some upgrade advice...
It's not a bad combo and there will be no compatibility problems with a DDR3 VidCard.I have to do this because I'd kill myself if I didn't... I have to say get a P45/X38/X48 mobo and grab an HD 4870. They're cheaper and(on average) perform much better then the 260. EDIT: Right now there is no way to future proof, because in another 5 or 6 months Intel is coming out with a whole new socket for their new Nehelam CPUs, but the X48 will be the closest you can get right now. Need some upgrade advice...
Go for it good choices but something from nvidia like 9600Gt is good!
Go for it good choices but something from nvidia like 9600Gt is good!
Ummm... if he's looking at a 260, a 9600GT would be a huge drop down. HD 4870 is a MUCH better choice.
thanks for your advice strife, I've personally never had an ATi GPU before but I'm hearing that card mentioned EVERYWHERE! It really must be a great buy and I'll look into it. That kind of depresses me about nahalem, but what can you do. I need an upgrade now not later, and I wouldn't be ablt to afford it anyway:P So the 260 wouldn't be a bad choice though? I'm mainly concerned with running the new games coming out at full with no hiccups such as Fallot 3 and Empire: TW to name a few (huge fan of both franchises). I'm also using this as my excuse to get Vista. Is there another (higher end) nvidia card that would be much better?
I'm NOT an ATi fanboy. I ran a 6800 for 2 years, but the new 4800 series ROCK! You could stick with the 260 or 280 and they're good cards, but they're just too expensive. The HD 4870 beats the 260 everytime and AT LEAST $10 cheaper and even beats the 280 in some tests (the absolute BEST Nvidia card). I gotta say. These 4800 cards dealt a fierce blow to Nvidia and I can't recommend anything else right now. PS- If you decide to go with a 4870. Use this fan fix to keep your GPU cool(the stock fan speeds are ridiculously slow, but the fan is good if you tweeak it with this): HD 4800 series Fan Fix.
