Money is not an issue but I dont want to throw money away that I dont have to. Building a computer for the first time. Here are the main components:Processor ( [=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX9650 (4x 3.0GHz/12MB L2 Cache/1333FSB)Processor Cooling ( ULTRA ChillTec Thermo Electric CPU Cooler Motherboard ( [SLI] Asus Striker II Formula nForce?780i SLI Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 3-Way PC 3-Way SLI %26 EPU Technology )Memory ( 4 GB [1 GB X4] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Hard Drive ( 1 TB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 32M Cache] ) Is this overkill and if it is, will it last a few years?
This CPU will be outperformd by 350-400$ CPU in 2-3 months. Wait for Nehalem. Is this overkill and if it is, will it last a few years?
if you have that kind of money to spend and want to play games put the focus on the grapgics card then onto the CPU second. If you have that kinda money buy a 280GTX or 2 in SLI. For a CPU you dont need the extreem version, get the Q9450 and you will be laughing. also 4GB's of 1066Mhz DDR2 RAM would last you a good amount of time.
This CPU will be outperformd by 350-400$ CPU in 2-3 months. Wait for Nehalem.
Yep, if you're wanting to look to the future, wait for the Nehalem. Whole new socket, whole new mobo, and hopefully good use of DDR3.
Just wait a few more months for nehalem.
where's the gpu?
also 4GB's of 1066Mhz DDR2 RAM would last you a good amount of time.
he could just oc the pc2-6400 to pc2-8500
extreme edition cpus are nothing but a waste, they cost 3-4x as much for a few mhz
extreme edition cpus are nothing but a waste, they cost 3-4x as much for a few mhz
The extra cost is for an unlocked multiplier, still not worth it IMHO, but way more worth it than just a few MHz.
I vote almost total waste. The extreme processors are for benching. TEC is for suicide runs. You want this pc to last a few years yet your setting it up like a extreme benching rig. What are you wanting to do? Workstation? Go for skulltrail if you want to spend this kind of money. You want to game? Get a Q9450 or Q9550 and OC it on a Thermalright 120 extreme and you will surpass the clocks needed to yield no benefits easily enough. It is truely showing that this is your first build. For some reason it seems that your associating higher price with automatic higher performance yields, but bottleneck in other areas. That is a huge novice mistake.Board, ram, and HDD are good choices. CPU and Cooler are not.
Thermalright 120 extreme and you will surpass the clocks needed to yield no benefits easily enough.
make sure you watch a tutorial on spreading thermalpaste, I screwed it up and my temps are terrible w/120 xtreme >.<
The Q9550 performs neck and neck with the Quad extremes.. Beating the Quad extremes in like 11/26 categories.. and the other categories, it either matched up really well with the Quad extremes or loss by just a bit. Buy the Q9550, it's much better. If you were interested in an extreme, you should have bought it before the Q9450/9550 came out. Now, it's pretty much throwing your money away if you get the extremes.

Thermalright 120 extreme and you will surpass the clocks needed to yield no benefits easily enough.
make sure you watch a tutorial on spreading thermalpaste, I screwed it up and my temps are terrible w/120 xtreme >.<
Which is another reason I cannot fathom someone who is building their first PC, the OP, is going to buy extreme cooling TEC. TEC only helps people who know what they are doing. It dosent stop the lack of knowledge about mch, ram timings, and knowing if the motherboard your buying can sustain such a high FSB wall in the first place.I always used the dollop method. Little grain of rice and let the pressure do the work. I find the credit card or finger in the plastic bag to be sometimes.. faulty by my perception of even application.
Is Nehalem really worth the wait? If so I will. I guess I have never heard of it and dont know what the benefits of it vs current technology are. I'll admit, Im dumb when it comes to specs and building a PC. I have never done it before. Ive asked on here about building before and was tore apart about my lack of knowledge. I believe there are many people on here that know a ton about comp specs and building and I just wanted some opinions. I would love to build a machine that will last a few years without have to upgrade for gaming. I have an old tower and really want to get back into PC gaming but I would hate to buy something that only lets me play games like Crysis on low-med settings. Im not here trying to build a bargain maching like many are. I guess the skys the limit but I dont want to waste money on things that do not give me substance. Thanks for the help.
What graphics card you getting?
tbh waiting for nehalem just pretty much upto you. people allways says wait for this or wait for this it be amazing, but tbh it never is, people went mad for 4780 and gtx 260+280 but it wasnt a revolution.in the end of the day if you want pc get one.on ur specs and advise id say this:1:dont get nvdia I type motherboards they horribly unstable and have seen many of them badly gone wrong. i suggest a intell motherboard sinse these the most stable.2:graphics wise it depends on your monitor, if it a super high res or large ie 24'' ect and you wish to play super high res ie 2100+ect then get GTX 280 SINSE THIS BEST CARD ON MARKET.but i suggest 4780 sinse it runs 1600x1200 perfectly fine and above at high graphics and even better than GTX 260 IN 80% of all reveiws and tests(overclock it and you get upto 280 spec) 3:cooling wise, the CPU cooler overkill, a scyth zinpang will be fine or a thermite 120 heatsink extreame with 120mm fan added will also do.4:make sure case big enough for all the parts no cheapy cases which lots of the new parts dont fit will not work.5:DDR3 waste of money, i was going to get it but there such LITTLE performance differance it totaly waste, ddr2 1066 raptor will do fine and be good, 4 gigs a must.(remember though vista would then need 64 bit NOT 32bit) Basicaly, i suggest if you not built before make sure you learn LOTS sinse making a high end pc can be tricky and if you mess up it you who suffer bad.make sure all parts are checked before putting into case and layed out neatly, it helps to take your time, dont rush.it will take a good 4-7 days to build a top notch pc properly, if you really worried get someone who knows to build it.or help. spec wise again il say: if you want to wait, you can end up waiting for gods gift to man kind if you dont take the pludge at some point, waiting easy and just as easy to flame or shout when it NOT your money, so hopefuly people here be nice:)gl, have fun, and post ur specs as you progress
ok so I will drop the cooling kit and just stick with the fans, I planned on getting the gtx 280 or maybe 2 of them in sli. Ok why would I have to get Vista 64? Like I said, I will get 64, the price isnt the issue, I just wanted to know why. Thanks for being so nice ^.^
